The free-to-play hero-shooter Marvel Rivals is in a tough spot. After launching in December 2024 on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S, the game quickly hit a peak of more than 640,000 players on Steam. But interest has faded fast, and current numbers barely reach 100,000 concurrent players.

To keep the community alive, developer NetEase is bringing the game to PlayStation 4 on September 12, timed with the start of the next season. The PS4 may be aging, but its massive active user base could give Marvel Rivals a fresh surge of players. Surprisingly, no Xbox One version has been announced.

NetEase says performance on PS4 has been tested: 30 FPS at 1080p on the standard console and 60 FPS at 1440p on PS4 Pro. Alongside the port, the upcoming seasonal update will add new characters, balance changes, and content aimed at revitalizing interest.

Whether this strategy will help Marvel Rivals compete with giants like Overwatch remains to be seen.
